OVERVIEW
Lala.com is a free, fully licensed online service that provides anywhere Web access to an existing music library. Replacing the approach of uploading MP3 files from a personal computer, Lala has a licensed technology that instantly matches songs from user’s personal music libraries with the Web-based catalog on lala.com.

In other words, Lala allows a user to download and buy songs from its catalog much like any other online music store. The difference is that a user can upload all of the songs from their personal music library to their new online Lala collection. This allows the user to access their music anytime, anywhere and from any computer.

HOW IT ALL WORKS
Lala gives its users the ability to listen to any of its songs once for free. Lala matches the songs on any personal computer to its catalog and adds the song to the user’s Lala collection for free. The number of songs a user can add is unlimited.

After the first listen, a user can get unlimited plays of a song for 10 cents or download the song for 69 cents more. All the MP3s are legal and compatible with iTunes and Windows Media Player.

When a user first visits the site, he or she must create a profile with a username and password. These profiles can be personalized with information like a nickname, location and “about you and your music.” The user can also upload a personal photo.

After this profile has been created, Lala gives each member 25 free downloads as a thanks for joining. After these 25 songs free have been chosen, the user must either pay for any listens after the first or purchase the songs. The user can also install a program called “Music Mover,” which allows for the uploading of songs from the user’s personal music library to their new online Lala collection. Installing the “Music Mover” program is relatively painless but does take some time to finish.

NUMBER & QUALITY OF MUSIC FILES
Lala.com has an extensive collection of songs and albums in its catalog; it boasts over seven million songs. More importantly to music lovers, Lala provides complete albums that can be listened to all the way through once before the user decides to purchase the album or a song at a relatively inexpensive price. This is a unique feature in comparison to other music downloading sites that may not allow a user to listen to a song in its entirety for free.

The music files from Lala’s catalog are good-quality. The sound is clear and consistent, as if you had gone out and bought the actual CD.

SEARCH CAPABILITY
There are several ways to search at lala.com:
1. Type in the name of a song or album and Lala will find it for you. Lala will also offer suggestions of artists that correlate with a letter or letters a user may type into the search bar. For example, if you type in the letter “g” into the search bar, Lala suggests the groups Boys like Girls, the Goo Goo Dolls, the Grateful Dead and several more.
2. Lala also allows a user to search by genre of music. By clicking on Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, etc., Lala will take the user to a new page with songs and albums relating only to the selected category. Lala even goes as far as to offer sub-genres to make searching for a particular song or album even easier.

3. If a user is not looking for a particular song, they can also browse for music by Top Sellers, New Releases, Bestsellers, Hot Deals and several other categories.

USABILITY & APPEARANCE
Lala.com is an easy website to navigate. The design and layout is reminiscent of many other online music forums, such as iTunes.com. The site allows the user to organize their songs into playlists and separates songs into various genre, artist and album categories, allowing the user to search their own library to find a particular song.

Not only is the layout and design of Lala easy to navigate and user-friendly, it is also pleasing to the eye. The overall color scheme is consistent throughout. The site is also consistent in the design of the links on the page. Each time the user rolls over text that is a link, the words become underlined, highlighted or change color allowing for easy navigation

A distinctive feature of lala.com is that the site allows a user to continue searching for new songs while music from their collection continues to play. The user can pause, change or buy the song that is playing at any time.

This dark blue bar that contains the music player at the very top of the page is constant no matter where the user clicks on the page. This bar also contains the link to the home page, which is the Lala logo. This logo is used throughout the site helping to instill ethos.

COMPARISON: LALA VS. iTUNES
Lala.com, while not as popular or well-known as other music sites, still holds up in comparison. iTunes, with its similar layout, also allows its users to search for, download and purchase songs for their personal collection.

There are three main differences between these two sites:
1. iTunes does not allow the user to listen to an entire song; it only allows for 30 seconds of listening time.
2. iTunes will charge (typically) 20 cents more to download the same song as Lala will, sometimes more.
3. A user’s collection of songs from their Lala account can be accessed from any computer; an iTunes library can only be accessed from the user’s personal computer.
